Dean Murray

ARTIST PROFILE

Dean Murray is a seasoned singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Manakau. His music blends folk, blues, country, and reggae, often infused with political and environmental themes. Over the years, he has penned more than 150 songs.

Murray's musical journey began with classical piano lessons in his youth. He later taught himself guitar in his early 20s, starting with just two chords. While working at freezing works for over a decade, he and his friend Tura Rata began busking during a union strike, eventually forming the band Gravel Slappers with drummer Brent Gemmell. They performed across the North Island, blending various musical genres.

In the early 2000s, Murray released his debut album, Yeah Nah, recorded at Muddy Boots Studio in the Akatarawa Ranges. The album featured collaborations with musicians like Earl Pollard, Ross McDermott, Jan Campbell, Moira Howard, Aaron Andis, Colleen Trenwith, Carylann Martin, Bullfrog Rata, and Andrew London. He later joined the band Henpicked, alongside Carylann Martin, Kirsten London, and Anje Glindemann, releasing three albums over seven years.

Beyond music, Murray is deeply connected to sustainable living. He built his own rammed-earth home, utilises renewable energy, and maintains a property with livestock and native plantings aimed at restoring natural wetlands. His commitment to the environment is evident both in his lifestyle and his songwriting.

After retiring from a 26-year career as a school caretaker, Murray re-engaged with the local music scene, performing at venues like the Levin Folk Music Club and Firebird, and collaborating again with Carylann Martin and Steve Poulton. He's also involved in crafting his own instruments, including guitars and amplifiers, and has even planted Tasmanian hardwood trees for future instrument-making.

Dean Murray is a cherished figure in the Kāpiti and Horowhenua music communities, known for his heartfelt performances and dedication to both his craft and the environment.
