“I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, we’re all touched by music.” ~ Billy Joel

Our musical mission

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves, Billy. How lucky we are to be spoiled for choice in Aotearoa for opportunities to hear live music. In Kāpiti alone there are at least 10 live music events happening every week - especially in the summer months. But getting information out to people is often left to chance.

Mostly Music is on a mission to change the way information about local music is gathered and shared. We believe this kaupapa will increase awareness of live music events, support the artists performing, and support the venues which open their doors to host musicians.

    • Providing a one-stop music event calendar for locals and visitors to our region

    • Promoting information about musical events in Kāpiti through our marketing and communications channels

    • Taking the pressure off venues to be consistent in spreading the word of their musical events

    • Showcasing all genres of music - music is broad, diverse and enlightening!

    • Celebrating music-makers in our region, and encouraging people to recognise their artistry

    • Acknowledging the industry creatives who work within the industry, and connecting them as best we can

    • Helping people to understand how broad and diverse the music scene is, and how to support local music

    • Discrimination against any kind of musician - everyone is equal on this platform, and we embrace diversity

    • Discrimination against genres - everything from death metal to traditional waiata to free jazz is welcome

    • Excluding covers gigs from the event calendar. Kāpiti’s music community is alive and well with some phenomenal original artists, and it just so happens that some of these artists also play covers in various ensembles at our local venues from time to time. Supporting them supports their journey as an original artist

    • Being a ticketing agent, although this is something we are interested in exploring in the future, if there’s demand

Our plans for the future

Mostly Music is administered and funded by a small collective of passionate, enthusiastic local musicians. We kept hearing about gigs when it was too late; a notice in last week’s newspaper, a rogue Facebook event or post, a fleeting Instagram story, and we felt certain we could do something to bring it all together.

We care deeply about music being shared and appreciated for the inclusive, soulful art form that it is - it’s really as simple as that. So having one dedicated public place where anyone could visit and see what’s coming up around town was our first priority when we began designing what Mostly Music could be.

Right now our focus is on live music events in Kāpiti because that’s the place we call home, and supporting our own community is at the forefront of our minds. But we also recognise that the digital infrastructure we have carefully created would be useful in other communities, and that there are further opportunities to help support creatives working in the music industry. If you’d like to see Mostly Music in your own backyard, please get in touch.

After spending a good few months carrying out market research and digital usability testing, Mostly Music launched in November 2022 with the following features:

  • ‘Add Event’ feature - a form inviting musicians and music promoters to share information about upcoming music events in Kāpiti

  • Event Calendar - a tool showing upcoming music events which is able to be filtered by genre, date or location, and the events themselves are able to be shared via a link and added to personal calendars

  • Weekly gig guide - an email sent to our database with information about all the events coming up for the week ahead, with a direct link to view the full calendar

From here Mostly Music will be rolling out other features, all designed to create connection between music and its audiences. Thanks for joining us.
