Geoff Culverwell

ARTIST PROFILE

Geoff  Culverwell was a veteran New Zealand jazz trumpet player, multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, educator, and recording artist. His career spanned over four decades, with performances at international venues like Montreux Jazz Festival and London’s Ronnie Scott’s. He was also a member of three New Zealand super groups (Quincy Conserve, the 1860 Band, and The Rodger Fox Big Band).

Aotearoa lost one of the greats when Geoff passed away in January 2026.

A versatile musician, he played trumpet, flugelhorn, flute, keys, and occasionally sang too. He recorded five albums as a bandleader and contributed extensively as a studio musician for film, television, and other artists. His Chet‑Baker tribute show gained acclaim for its lyrical horn and vocals, earning sold‑out performances at major jazz festivals.

Alongside performing, Geoff was committed to jazz education: he regularly led workshops—such as during International Jazz Day in Whanganui—and shared deep insights into improvisation, harmony, and groove.

Based in Te Horo, Geoff was always on the lookout for his next gig. He actively brought musicians together to perform and led groups around New Zealand, from regional clubs and jazz festivals to intimate gigs in small towns, bringing smooth, groove-infused jazz to audiences country‑wide.
