Te Marama o Puoro Aotearoa, NZ Music Month is here!
There’s something about May.
Maybe it’s the crispness in the air, or the way the music industry seems to become a bit more alive. Whatever it is, Te Marama o Puoro Aotearoa | New Zealand Music Month rolls around each year and reminds us that great music is everywhere, and it affects all of us.
At Mostly Music, we love this time of year. It’s a chance to celebrate the artists, the venues, the communities, and the moments that make up our local music ecosystem, and to invite more people into it.
So if you’ve been wondering how to get involved, here’s your starting point.
Go where the music is
The easiest way to support local music? Show up.
Across Kāpiti, Horowhenua, Wellington and beyond, there are gigs, open mics, showcases, and one-off events popping up all month long. These aren’t just “things to do” — they’re moments where artists and audiences meet in real time, where something unrepeatable happens.
Sign up to the Mostly Music gig guide, make a plan with friends, or just follow your ears. You don’t need to know the artist. You just need to be there, and judging by the Event Calendar, there are plenty of moments to look forward to this month!
Listen with intention
We all listen to music every day, but NZ Music Month is a great time to do it a bit more consciously.
Seek out artists from your own backyard. Dive into a local playlist. There is so much incredible music being made right here, often without the machine behind it. Check out our Spotify profile for some inspo in this department.
And yes, we’ll say it: do yourself (and the world) a favour and avoid the AI slop. Real music, made by real people, hits different.
Be more than a passive listener
Following an artist on social media. Liking a post. Sending a message after a gig.
These might seem like small actions, but for independent musicians, they matter so much!
Engaging with artists helps build connection, visibility, and momentum. It turns music from something you consume into something you’re part of.
If you’re not sure where to start, head to the Mostly Music Local Artists page and fall down a rabbit hole. You’ll likely discover someone you didn’t know you needed in your life. You’re welcome.
Wear your support on your sleeve(s)
One of the most visible (and fun) ways to get involved is NZ Music T-Shirt Day, happening on Friday 29 May.
Grab a tee from your favourite local artist, wear it proudly, and spark a conversation. It’s a simple act that supports both artists and the incredible mahi of MusicHelps.
If you’re an artist — this is your moment
NZ Music Month isn’t just about listening. It’s your time, musos!
If you’re making music, now is the time to lean in. Share your work. Post that video. Announce that gig. Send in your artist profile if you haven’t already.
Visibility doesn’t happen by accident… especially not in the saturated digital world we live in. It happens because you show up and let people in.
And if you’re looking for connection, come along to one of our Muso Meetups on the 16th May in Kāpiti or 17th May in Horowhenua. These spaces are about building relationships, sharing ideas, and remembering that there’s an industry in our backyard that we can all participate in.
Support local. Support live.
At its core, NZ Music Month is a reminder that music ecosystems don’t just exist, they’re built. By artists, yes, but also by audiences, venues, organisers, and communities who choose to engage.
Every ticket bought, every song streamed, every conversation started all adds up.
So this May, lean in. Discover something new. Back something local.
You might just find that in supporting live music, you get something back too.
