Standing up for our scene: reflections on the Kāpiti Music Industry Workshop
On 12 November 2025 we held the Strengthening the Music Scene: A Kāpiti Industry Workshop in collaboration with Kāpiti Business Chamber. It was a milestone moment for us — about two and half years in the making — and moment to celebrate for the Kāpiti music community. At the time of writing this blog it’s been nearly two weeks since the event and we’re still processing the incredible amount of information we received that evening. We’re blown away by the contributions!
The idea sparked by a shared belief between the Kāpiti Business Chamber and Mostly Music that music deserves to be recognised as more than a pastime — it’s a vital part of our local economy, culture, and identity. What followed was weeks of planning, collaboration, and volunteer hours from people who care deeply about this place and its creative heartbeat.
On the night, that heartbeat was loud and clear. The room was full — musicians, venue owners, educators, promoters, event organisers, hospitality businesses, and council representatives all came together to talk, listen, and imagine a stronger future for music in Kāpiti. It was an incredible cross-section of our creative ecosystem, each person bringing their own perspective, experience, and ideas.
The energy was tangible. There was passion in every conversation, post-it notes filled with ideas, and honest discussion about what’s working and what’s getting in the way. It was a reminder of just how much potential exists here when people from across the sector come together with shared purpose.
Now comes the careful part. We’ve gathered a huge amount of feedback and insight, and we want to take the time to do it justice. Over the coming weeks we’ll be collating and analysing the data, drawing out themes, and preparing a report to share with those who are interested; hopefully Kāpiti Coast District Council and the wider community. This will form the foundation for future conversations, advocacy, and hopefully — meaningful change.
For us, this workshop represents a statement: that music is an essential part of Kāpiti’s story, and that those who make, host, teach, and support it are vital contributors to our region’s wellbeing and economy. Music deserves to be recognised as an economic driver, and The Arts deserves to be supported to each its full potential.
We’re proud to stand up for that truth, and proud of everyone who showed up to lend their voice.
This is just the beginning, and we can’t wait to share more as the work continues.
Thank you to everyone who helped make the event possible — our volunteers, Chamber members, facilitators, note-takers, and everyone who contributed to the kōrero. If you’d like to stay updated or read the upcoming impact report, sign up for our newsletter.
